The aim of these Awards is to highlight and reward innovative proposals that contribute to the development of systems and applications based on new technologies, the integration of environmental considerations in the design of innovative products and services, the widespread use of new information and communication technologies, and the creation of new enterprises in traditional sectors, leveraging innovation in the latter.

Garyfalia participated in the competition with a business proposal entitled “Transparent solar power panels, mounted on a solar hot water heater“. The main problem she is trying to solve is how to provide a dual solution of producing electricity and hot water with a compact product that fits on all rooftops. A sample of the product -a new type of solar water heater- has already been designed and produced. At a later stage, a solar transparent panel will be engraved on the collector panel of the water heater to produce electricity. The photovoltaic panel is designed with a 4th generation technology that is acting as a filter: It allows the solar energy to pass through the photovoltaic glass, absorbing 30% of the energy in order to produce electricity and leaving 70% of the energy to pass through the second glass to heat the water. The product is already patent protected.

It is also worth noting that in November 2016 Ms Minou received the 1st prize in the category “New Product Development” of the 6th Entrepreneurial Competition of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Unit of AUEB. She participated in the competition with the project Greek Light Cam, an innovative security system that she jointly designed and developed with another i-MBA alumna, Ms Helena Stamou.

Garyfalia is a graduate of the Department of Electronic Engineering at the TEI of Crete. In September 2014, she was one of the recipients of the scholarships offered by MSD to young entrepreneurs and researchers with innovative ideas to attend the i-MBA program and advance their business ideas. She graduated from the program in December 2015 and she currently pursues her PhD in the area of Embedded Systems & Techno economics, at the Department of Informatics and Telematics of Harokopio University.

During the welcome event, which took place in the Impact Hub Athens, Professor George Siomkos, Dean of the School of Business at AUEB, briefly introduced AUEB to the students and a cocktail reception followed.

The group of Monash MBA students, representing 15 different nationalities (including Australia, India, China, Switzerland, Italy, Egypt, Japan, Mexico, etc), spent 6 days in Athens. During their stay, they attended lectures on the Greek Economy (by Professor Plutarchos Sakellaris, AUEB) and on the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Greece (by PhD cand. Theodora Trachana – ACEin) and visited Apivita, Thenamaris and Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. All lectures and company visits were organized by i-MBA.

During their visit in Russia, the i-MBA representatives also participated in two educational fairs that took place in Moscow and St. Petersburg, where they had the opportunity to meet and discuss with Russian candidates interested in the program.

Moreover, they visited PwC Russia, where they had the opportunity to present the career services offered by the program and discussed potential collaboration in the frame of graduates’ recruitment, FSP projects, internships/training programs, visiting lectures and presentations, etc.

European Small Businesses Portal is an EU initiative aiming at helping SMEs get finance, partners, and go international. It is a useful source of information provided by the EU on and for SMEs, ranging from practical advice to policy issues.

Athina’s SME, Glossopolis, was founded in 2013 and is a travel platform that connects tourists with local business through the Greek language. By completing different online courses, tourists gain discounts at bars, restaurants, hotels and other local services. The services offered by the platform help tourists prepare for their holiday, save some extra cash and boost the Greek economy.

To help get Glossopolis off the ground, Athina participated in another EU initiative, the Erasmus for Entrepreneurs program, a cross-border exchange program which gives new or aspiring entrepreneurs the chance to learn from experienced entrepreneurs running small businesses in other participating countries. Her project was also featured in the dedicated page of the program.

‘I worked at the European Forum of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (EfVET), it was a very good step to learn how to promote your business to other countries,’ said Athina.

Glossopolis has since seen growth in both staff and revenue. Athina now has five employees, attracted travelers from 118 different counties and is hoping to expand to France and Spain.

Athina joined i-MBA (Innovation & Entrepreneurship major) in September 2015. She was selected to be the recipient of the scholarship offered by the program to one of the entrepreneurs hosted by Orange Grove.

Since 2013, AUEB is one of the Knowledge Partners of Orange Grove, together with the University of Amsterdam, the Delft University of Technology and StartLife.

Orange Grove is a flexible, dynamic work space and meeting place for young entrepreneurs that want to develop their business in Athens. It was initiated by the Netherlands Embassy in Athens together with a number of Greek and Dutch corporate sponsors and universities and links young entrepreneurs to Dutch and Greek companies and academic institutions. Its mission is to support young entrepreneurs on their way to starting their own business and to support start ups in growing their business.

Once selected, teams of Orange Grove enjoy a wide selection of training opportunities including bootcamp, seminars and workshops, which help teams turn their ideas into viable enterprises.

i-MBA, in its quest to continuously supporting innovation and entrepreneurship, and enhancing the successful collaboration of AUEB with Orange Grove, offers one scholarship for the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” Major of the Full-time program for the academic year 2016-2017.

The scholarship is open to one member of one of the teams that have already been selected by Orange Grove and are hosted by the center. It will cover all i-MBA tuition fees (equal to 12,000€). Candidates must show that with their ideas, knowledge, talent and drive they have the potential to build a business with global reach.

Attending the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” Major of the i- MBA Full-time program, recipients of the scholarships will acquire the technical, business and personality skills and knowledge necessary for a successful business venture. In the context of their Immersion Project, after completion of all the courses, they will also have the opportunity to work 100% of their time on their new venture.

Applicants should follow the formal procedure for admission to the program and also attach a one-page summary (about 500 words) describing their idea and the steps that they will take for the implementation of their project. This essay should summarize the idea and the intended business model under the following headlines:

1. Targeted Customers – Segments and Types of Customers.
2. Value Proposition – What is the product/service intended to be offered, why and how is it innovative, and what are the key needs it will address among the intended customers?
3. Key Resources – What are the competencies, knowledge, relationships and resources in the new venture that will enable it to succeed?
4. Revenue Streams – How will the venture potentially make money? Even if the idea is for a non-profit, it must break even to be a sustainable venture.

The Global Management Challenge is the largest Strategy and Management Competition in the world. It’s an international event based on business simulations, in which more than 500.000 university students and company managers throughout the world participate. It consists of a management simulation in which each teams runs a company with the objective of getting the highest investment performance. The concept of the competition emerged in 1980 in Portugal and nowadays it is present in more than 30 countries.

64 student teams from 10 Universities and 5 Technological Institutions participate this year in GMC Greece that began on 8 March. The Greek final, in which 8 finalists will participate, will take place on 4 April. The prize for the winners will be a trip to the International Final that will take place in Macao, 18-20 April. Representatives from more than 30 countries will be present!

The i-MBA – MSD – ID-GC collaboration was initiated in May 2013, aiming at the advancement of the curriculum offered at the Innovation & Entrepreneurship major of the Program. MSD, the global healthcare leader, offered 22 scholarships to applicants for this particular i-MBA major for the academic years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015.

Scholarships were open to candidates with innovative ideas resulting from academic research, or entrepreneurs in the first stages of designing or developing new business, having the potential to become industry disruptors and game changers with global reach. Through this initiative the recipients of the scholarships acquired all necessary technical, business and personality skills and knowledge to turn their research output or innovative idea into a successful business venture.

The results of this collaboration were presented in a press conference which took place last March in Athens.

Hellenic Responsible Business Awards identify and celebrate innovative and sustainable solutions that businesses are creating to address most pressing social challenges and to return long-term value to the society.

The medal was presented at a formal ceremony that took place in Athens on Tuesday 15 September. i-MBA Director, Professor George Ioannou, and the Associate Director, Policy & Communications, MSD Greece, Dr. Emmanuel Alexandrakis,  received the award.
